I like how Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops is divided into three different parts, with the last part being little anecdotes from bookshops around the world. This is the perfect book to use as a gift for anyone working in a bookshop or library, or any booklover in general for that matter! Fun, entertaining and full of weird situations that will make both your eyebrows raise and wonder what those customers were thinking when they opened the door to the bookshop that day… But at least it has given us this book to brighten up our day. It took me longer than expected to actually get, but this was just the right book at the right time for me. I love books about books and after reading The Bookshop Book by the same author back in 2016, I added Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops to my wishlist. I don’t remember the author, or the title. Genre: Non Fiction, Humor, Books About Books (Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops #1) Title: Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops Time for another round of Yvo’s Shorties! This time around again two different genres… A non fiction book about books I’ve been wanting to pick up for a while and a MG read I decided to pick up on a whim. 2023 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge. 2017 Netgalley And Edelweiss Reading Challenge.

The easier something is to do, the more likely you are to do it. This is the very antithesis of the ‘Go Big or Go Home’ mentality so prevalent in most self-development books. Help people do what they already want to do.Fogg puts forward three maxims that are instrumental in Behaviour Change. When you plant the seed of a habit and nurture it, one day it will bear the fruit of success. It cannot be stressed enough that when trying some aspect of self-improvement (losing weight, reading/praying/meditating every day), you might NEVER succeed at ALL of the components. In a previous post I explained how feeling successful even in a small way helps a habit to grow. There are two prevailing ideas that lead to failure:īoth of these ideas are false and in some ways dangerous to your long-term success and mental health. This is where most Habit Change methods fall down. Most of our ‘bad’ habits deliver some reward that is out of proportion to the effort needed to do them.Īs the author states, “ The essence of Tiny Habits is this: take a behaviour you want, make it tiny, find where it fits naturally in your life, and nurture its growth.” He also explains why bad habits such as endless scrolling on social media ( Youtube, Facebook) are so hard to break. Dr Fogg stresses the importance of making the new habit as easy as possible to incorporate into your already existing routines. He argues that ""scientists who are convinced materialists deny the existence of things other than those they can train their instruments on,"" but in reality have ""discovered nothing in the way of objective facts that counts against traditional metaphysics."" Smith's arguments are reminiscent of Philip Johnson's Darwin on Trial in fact, he nods appreciatively to Johnson's work. But scientism, Smith says, contributes to ""modernity's tunnel,"" a metaphorical structure that hides the metaphysical from view. In this challenging but accessible book, Smith ardently declaims religion's relevance, taking on luminaries, such as Carl Sagan and Stephen Jay Gould, who hold that ""only matter exists"" and suggest that religion relates only to ""subjective experiences."" Smith defines such thinking as scientism, an unfortunate worldview distinct from science, which, in and of itself, he celebrates. The intrigues of their charming, but devious cousin, Lucy Percy, Countess of Carlisle, is also explained – as is her long-lasting fame as a model for the villainous Milady in Dumas’ Three Musketeers.Ĭharles himself is shown as a deeply honourable man – committed to his people, his duty as king and his religion, which was wholeheartedly Protestant in theology, but strongly influenced by Archbishop Laud’s emphasis on external reverence – which induced many to believe Charles was too sympathetic to Catholicism. The role of the Rich brothers – Henry, 1st Earl of Holland, and Robert, 3rd Earl of Warwick - in fomenting the difficulties Charles had in obtaining the finance he need to prosecute a war that Parliament had agreed to, to protect Protestant interests in Europe against the resurgent Catholic powers, is explored in detail. De Lisle opened my eyes to a very different perspective on the period. Despite having studied it at A Level, my knowledge of the reign of King Charles I and the Civil War was hazy, but my overall impression of the standard narrative is Charles – wicked tyrant Parliament – heroic democrats. In conflict with King’s nonviolent philosophy, Carmichael told marchers in Greenwood, Mississippi, “We have got to get us some black power.” He later explained that the slogan was “a call for black people in this country to begin to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations.” Carmichael’s rhetoric, influenced by Malcolm X, signified a growing divide in the civil rights movement between those who encouraged interracial collaboration and those who advocated black separatism. Meredith was shot and wounded, but other black leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr., and Carmichael, continued the march. James Meredith initiated the march to protest white resistance, in defiance of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to black voter registration. "In June 1966, the national chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Stokely Carmichael, first voiced the slogan “Black Power” during a march in Mississippi. or the mothers die in agonizing, failed pregnancies.Īs governments and societies rapidly collapse, the surviving fringe watches the scaled dinosaur birds in the trees and turns inward toward an incipient religious frenzy.
